Geiger selected for Art's Alive Festival of Fine Art
Karen Geiger, a CCV staff member and alumna, has been selected to exhibit her work at the upcoming 2008 Art’s Alive Festival of Fine Art. This juried show has long been a highlight of the Burlington artistic community and Karen is one of only fifty-six artists chosen to participate.
The images included with this post are of two of the paintings that Karen will be submitting to the festival. Both are from her False Memory series and are acrylic on canvas (24X18”). The first is titled One Block to the Left and the second is Only the Light.
Congratulations on this fine achievement Karen! For more information on the 2008 Art’s Alive Festival of Fine Art, click here.

International Food Festival a BIG Success
picadillo from Cuba
palm butter soup from Liberia
egg fried rice from China
challah bread from the United States
molikia from Sudan
vegetable dumplings from China
samosas from India
pizelles from Italy
More than 200 people enjoyed the tastes, sights and sounds of last week’s International Food Festival, a multi-cultural event at the Community College of Vermont in Burlington. CCV students prepared most of the food and their classmates, families, friends, neighbors and teachers ate it all. A newly arrived Iraqi family escorted to the event by a CCV student from Peru enjoyed dinner together. A couple from Texas read about the event in 7 Days and decided to check it out.
The CCV Burlington Community Choir sang songs of national transition (South Africa) and Sergio Torres, a CCV graduate this June, sang Latin American favorites. A couple of students from James Blynt’s Comparative Religions class baked challah bread and described its significance on posters nearby. And, most playfully, children colored people pins and students marveled at Mendhi art designed impromptu by a professional artist right on their very own hands.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible. We hope to see you there next year!

The War Behind the Wars: Information Security and Exploitation and the Formation of Nations
Historical record often attributes the most pivotal events in warfare to victories on the battlefield, in the naval theater or skies. As military documents become declassified, evidence is revealed of the critical role of clandestine information gathering missions that led directly to military victory. In this lecture Jonathan Habif will discuss the nature of the warfare of informatics, as well as describe several of the most intriguing and daring intelligence missions in modern warfare. The lecture will conclude with an assessment of modern information security capabilities and key weaknesses that are likely to shape the future of warfare.
Please join Jonathan on Thursday, May 1st, at 11:45 in Cherry Room 301 as he discusses the relationship between national security and modern warfare.
