In celebration of Green Up Day, several Student Advisory Board members and staff will be meeting at the Winooski site (1 Abenaki Way) this Saturday at 10:00AM to pick up trash behind our new building.

We would love to have some help so please, if interested, join us! The weather is supposed to be sunny and 77 degrees…perfect garbage collecting temperature! Trash bags will be provided but be sure to dress appropriately.

The Alternative Transportation Fair will take place in the Lobby of the Department of Health at 108 Cherry Street on Thursday, April 29, 2010 from noon-2pm

Go Vermont!, Vermont Bike and Ped Coalition, CCTA, and CCV will be there to provide information on alternative transportation options.

CCV's Moving Toward Sustainability class is working on solutions, guidance, information, and support that will encourage more people to leave their cars at home in favor of carpools, the bus, walking, biking, and other muscle-powered transportation. Let's make our move to Winooski an opportunity to start new patterns, and move toward greater campus sustainability! All visitors can enter to win free raffle items.

How will you get to CCV next fall?

CCV and the CCV Moving Toward Sustainability class challenge you to leave your personal car at home and carpool, walk, bike, or bus to school instead. If everyone can do this for even one week, it will reduce traffic congestion in Winooski, lower individual transportation costs, reduce pollution, and may even spark new friendships.

Pledge to leave your car at home and be automatically entered in a raffle for a $30 gift certificate to the Skirack, or a free 10-ride bus pass.

Step 1: Pick up an entry form at the Learning Center or Pearl Street reception desks
Step 2: Fill out the form with your pledge and contact information so we can tell you if you won the raffle.
Step 3: Drop off your entry sheet at 119 Pearl St. or Learning Center Reception desk. You can also enter online at LeaveYourCarAtHome@gmail.com

International Food Fest: A huge success!

More than 200 people attended the International Food Festival last week as the sun set on the Overlook Café balcony in Burlington.

CCV students prepared dozens of different dishes including Ethiopian injera, Vietnamese egg rolls, Nepalese aaloo gobi tarkari, Cuban empanada and Colombian ceviche. They hailed from many countries including Uruguay, Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Mali, China, Guam and the United States. Most importantly they reinforced the connections they have to home, each other and the greater CCV community. Champlain College student Van, a CCV graduate from Vietnam, told me “I came back to this because I love it and I still have friends here.”

Thank you to all of our cooks, hosts, musicians, and attendees for making the IFF an event to remember.

How will you get to CCV in Winooski?

The Moving Toward Sustainability class, led by Jeanie Williams, invites all students, faculty and staff to an Alternative Transportation Fair on Thursday, April 29 from noon to 2 pm to help the CCV community explore and discuss our transportation options. Please come to support students in their work to develop solutions, and compile helpful information related to alternative transportation at CCV.

Listen to short student presentations on alternative transportation solutions and incentives. Discuss student projects with individuals.
Access resources on why biking, walking, bussing, and carpooling are so valuable and how to take part in these activities.
Enter free raffle drawings for prizes related to alternative transportation.Share your strategy for getting to CCV. How will you challenge yourself to leave your car at home?
Speak with representatives from transportation organizations such as CCTA and the Vermont Bike and Pedestrian Coalition.

This is an open event, where individuals can come and go at their leisure. Come for the whole thing or drop in for 10 minutes. We hope to see you there! Specific location is yet to be determined, but it will be at the CCV Burlington Campus. Look for signs!

Today is Community College Poetry Day!

Kay Ryan, the U.S. Poet Laureate, has established this day--the start of National Poetry Month--as Community College Poetry Day.

She will be holding a live videoconference today (1:00 PM) where she will talk with students from several community colleges about the process of writing and revising her own poems and finding the inspiration to write.

VSC Board of Trustees selects CCV President!

By unanimous action of the VSC Board of Trustees, Joyce Judy was offered and accepted the position of CCV President on Thursday, March 18th.

According to Chancellor, Tim Donovan, "By every measure, Joyce rose to the top of a strong national pool of more than 50 candidates. Joyce's command of the issues facing CCV, her vision for its potential, and her strong relationships with CCV faculty, staff and community partners will serve CCV well as its new president."

We are proud to have President Judy at the helm. Congratulations!

Reflections from Catrina Maxwell, CCV Student

I, Catrina Maxwell, served in the U.S. Air Force as an active duty munitions technician from October 18th 2004 to October 18th 2008. “The Things They Carried” is a short story about soldiers serving during the Vietnam War. After reading the short story “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien, I was deeply moved and felt compelled to write the following response:

Being in the military can be a lot like being a Martian. There is an intrinsic feeling that you are part of something distant and misunderstood, while everyone else carries on in some other plane of existence that is both fascinated by, and fearful of your presence. Tim O’Brien knows this feeling of alienation well, being a veteran himself. In his short story, “The Things They Carried”, O’Brien gives the reader a glimpse into the great many things that separate us (in the service) from the civilians, the burden of which is remarkable.

His main character, Lt. Jimmy Cross, gives the reader a laundry list of tangible items and their weight. This physical, specified weight is an integral piece in the full picture of the story. The reader must know the load of these things to understand the crushing pain of carrying it. For all of the blood in combat, there is an equal amount of sweat, and the struggle with each is palpable. From the Kevlar of the helmet to the steel toes inside the boots, the bulk is exhausting and extremely limiting, which makes freedom an impossibility. The weight of the things that the men carry on their bodies is both painful and binding.

So too are the emotional encumbrances that they carry. These are perhaps even more
devastating as they are indispensable. The author has given these men additional cargo that cannot be blown apart or thrown away. Kiowa bunkers down in a foxhole with the rest of the men, but his mistrust still presses down on him. Lavender carries on beneath the weight of his paranoia, until the moment a bullet grants him leave. Lt. Cross can burn the pictures of her, but his love for Martha still nags at him, and eventually, turns him into another cog in the stone faced machine. These are not weights that can be left in the dirt; these are weights that are gnarled into the soul.

CCV's Career Readiness Certificate in the News!

Congressman Welch held a press conference at the CCV site in Montpelier yesterday to announce funding support for CCV’s Career Readiness Certificate program. The Congressman was instrumental in helping to secure $150,000 to support the continuation of this program.

Two students, Jay Bresett of Montpelier and Everette Fluery from Waterbury, as well as Green Moutain Coffee Roaster supervisor, Mike Vasseur, spoke about the value of this program.

FREE Tax Preparation at CCV

Would you like your taxes done for FREE and FAST?

Was your total family income less than $50,000 in 2009?

If you answered yes to both of these questions, sign up for an appointment to have your taxes done at CCV through the Vermont Income Tax Assistance Program. The appointments will be on Wednesday, February 10th, from 2-5pm in Room 110/Cherry Street.

Join us on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 9-11, on the CCV sponsored a college-wide weekend trip to Washington DC. As a group we will be touring the White House or U.S. Capitol, visiting the Monuments by Moonlight and attending a special event on Saturday evening. Spend the rest of the time as you wish.

How: We will fly round trip on Southwest Air out of MANCHESTER, NH. When we arrive we will take the Express Metro service into the capitol were we will go directly to Hostelling International to check in. It is an ideal location for getting around and visiting the sites. That evening we will take the Old Town Trolley Tours Monuments by Moonlight tour.
What time: Friday, April 9, leave at 10:50 AM from MANCHESTER, NH AIRPORT and arrive at BWI at 12:20 PM. On Sunday, April 11, leave BWI at 2:40 PM and return to MANCHESTER AIRPORT at 4:00 PM.

In commemoration of MLK Day, CCV Burlington is organizing its annual service event on Monday, January 18, 2010. Working with the Americorps program and local non-profits throughout Chittenden County, CCV students will have the opportunity to honor MLK’s legacy through volunteer work.

We will be meeting in our 119 Pearl St. building at 11:15 AM for an early lunch and to talk about King’s life and commitment to community service before heading down to City Hall at 12:00 PM. Students will be able to choose from a number of volunteer opportunities addressing many social issues. The day will conclude with a free community dinner with live music and entertainment at 5:00 PM in Contois Auditorium at City Hall. Moving Toward Sustainability--Recap

Jeannie William's Moving Toward Sustainability class recently presented their semester-long LYCAH, “Leave Your Car At Home” project to the CCV/Burlington community.

The class worked on projects that look ahead to CCV’s move to downtown Winooski, offering alternative transportation options to the CCV community that would help decrease the numbers of single drivers in single cars parking in Winooski, and encourage a greener approach to transportation to the new facility.

Student project highlights:

Student Colin Miller worked the challenge into his daily life by not driving for 7 weeks. He kept a journal of his daily transportation and presented an analysis of his savings, both in money he spent on gas and parking, and in the pounds saved from his personal carbon footprint. Colin’s challenge was all the more difficult, as he commutes from rural Brookfield.
Samantha Boymer and Tracy Simonds created a new Ride Board for CCV. The Ride Board is already available in the CCV student portal and students statewide and many of the students in the class developed ideas for CCV to use in promoting the new service.
Sarah Kresock presented a new bike share program for Burlington, based on programs used in cities around the world. For a modest fee, people would be able to pick up bicycles stationed in convenient locations around town and use them for daily transportation.
Michael La Moy presented a full case for using the CCTA bus system. Mike showed that once you work the bus schedule into your life, it is a safe, convenient, and planet-friendly approach to daily transportation. The CCTA bus system will continue to be a real convenience for CCV students when the new facility opens in Winooski. The bus stops right at CCV’s front door.

Brattleboro Reformer Article Highlights CCV's Growth!

According to an article published today in the Brattleboro Reformer, CCV is seeing its highest enrollment numbers in its 39 years! More high school students are enrolling in Introduction to College Studies and more students of all ages are pursuing their higher education dreams at one of the 12 CCV locations.

Annie Fernandez, our public relations coordinator, reflected, "At this time for spring registration 2009, we are 6 percent over what we were last year, as is the college statewide."

Who knows where we'll be in a couple of weeks?! This is an exciting time for the Community College of Vermont.

Nina Van Zandt has turned her love of snowboarding and childcare into her very own business!

The 'snowboarding nanny' was recently featured in an article within the hometown section of the Burlington Free Press. According to Nina, "I have been baby-sitting since I was a preteen, having taken the Red Cross baby-sitting course, and I have been snowboard instructing for two years. I thought bringing the two together would be a great business venture while I’m in college."

We're proud to have such a creative, active, and caring student in our liberal arts program at CCV Burlington!

CCV Student Honored with the 'Golden Apple Award'

CCV Burlington student, Richard "Max" Maxwell represented HomeDepot during the presentation of the 'Golden Apple Award' during the December 9th Winooski School Board meeting. Team Depot built baseball dugout benches, repaired dugout roofs, and donated materials and time to improve the Winooski athletic fields.

CCV Acting I and Guitar I students perform on Friday, Dec. 18!

Please come out to support our students who've been working hard all semester to prepare for this night!

Greg Matses teaches Guitar I and II as well as Intro. to Rock and Roll and really knows how to bring out the best in his students--he recently won an award at CCV for his excellence in teaching. It's so fun to watch him in action with his students; encouraging them to a new level in their playing (he even gets some of them to sing!).

Ronni Lopez, one of our acting teachers, is very creative in her approach. She teaches her students how to improvise with each other so not only to we get to witness written scenes and monologues but we get to see her students "play" spontaneously! You never know what will happen which makes it that much more exciting (for them and us!) The action takes place starting at 7pm in LL7.

As part of a Fletcher Free Library project, Deborah Straw's Foundations of Self class will be collecting books for underprivileged children. Please donate an appropriate new (or lightly used) book for a three to four year old if you can by noon on December 14. The students will deliver them to the library. No wrapping necessary.

The goal was to figure out ways to reduce car traffic to CCV. Most projects aim to promote modes of transportation that are different from driving a personal car. According to the article, "CCV has 179 international students (many of them immigrants or refugees) from 70 countries, or 2.5 percent of the total enrollment of 7,005." “The Word Show” features innovative and provocative work from nine artists who combine word and image in unusual and surprising ways. Using mediums like sculpture, painting, assemblage, handmade paper printing and more, the artists tease out common ground between language and visual art.

Here's a bit about Sharon Webster--Both a poet and visual artist, Webster offers mixed media work of various kinds, including work inspired by handwritten letters, books as sculptural objects and printing paraphernalia. Critic, Christopher Faris, described Webster’s work as “exhilaratingly abstract and surreal, yet poignantly expressive. Her constructions are magically thought provoking.”

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi: The Vanitas Landscape Tom O’Brien

Tom O’Brien, according to his website, had never given much thought to painting landscapes. For him, they were simply an overdone expression of art. With the Vanitas show, O’Brien seems to have found a way to re-examine the traditional landscape. The title of his show is telling.

The Latin term Sic Transit Gloria Mundi translates to “thus passes the glory of the world.” The vanitas painting technique O’Brien referrers to started in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. Used by still-life painters, the vanitas was a symbolic gathering of food, human skulls, maps, globes, and other earthly possessions. These paintings were meant to call to mind “the inevitability of death and the transience and vanity of earthly achievements and pleasures…”[1].

O’Brien asks that the viewer inhabit his landscape, to feel alone in the sense of place, and find what emotions that brings forth for them. Perhaps, somewhere through these windows, one will experience the sense of humanity and transience O’Brien wished to share.

“A strange thing is memory, and hope; one looks backward, and the other forward; one is of today, the other of tomorrow. Memory is history recorded in our brain, memory is a painter, it paints pictures of the past and of the day.” – Anna Mary Robertson Moses

Memory is not fact, we hold a moment in our minds and it tells a story of a time and a place. We repeat these to other people in our lives, but it’s never entirely accurate. Though these stories, we create an image of self. To ourselves, and to the people around us, our memories help make us who we are. But if the memories are not perfectly exact, instead of fact, the story becomes fiction, and therefore, a myth.

These paintings are my attempt at exploring the myths I have created about myself and my own life.

The memory series, involving Ravens, is a tribute to the mythology of the Norse God Odin. His two pet ravens, named Thought and Memory, flew around the world to gather information. This knowledge was passed onto Odin. My series uses Thought and Memory to collect bits and pieces of my childhood and bring them to light.

Harvest for Hunger Dinner a Success!

On Friday, October 23rd CCV organized it's annual Harvest for Hunger dinner at the Salvation Army in Burlington. Staff, faculty, and students spent the evening preparing and serving a delicious ham dinner to over 120 people. CCV organizes this event every year as part of Harvest for Hunger week, one week in October that aims to raise awareness about food security issues in Vermont. In the past, CCV has also organized food drives, coordinated a "Hike for Hunger" to raise money for Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, and hosted films and discussions that address the issue of poverty in the state. October Resource of the Month: Green Mountain Care Health Insurance

We're so excited to have Lisa Jensen, CCV's new resource coordinator, here to help students access community resources! October's resource of the month is Green Mountain Care. Green Mountain Care is the name for several low-cost and free health care programs offered by the state of Vermont and its partners. When you are uninsured, you can't always afford to go to the doctor when you need to, and minor health issues can turn into major problems. This became all too real for one of our students last year when she ignored early warning signs of an emerging health issue and ended up at FAHC for one week. These are expenses no one can afford, especially when you're starting out working towardds your degree and building your career.

As a college student, you may be eligible for one of the Green Mountain Care programs depending on your age, family situation and income. Generally you must be uninsured for 12 months or more unless your insurance ended due to a life changing event such as a loss of job reduced work hours, no longer qualifying as a dependent, and more.

Some programs require that students also work, while others do no.

Use the online screening tool at http://www.greenmountaincare.org/ or call 1-800-250-8427 to find out if you are eligible. Lisa also has information on-site. Stop by CCV on Wednesdays from 2-6pm or call her at 922-6297 if you would like to set up an appointment.

Harvest for Hunger, Salvation Army Dinner - 10th Anniversary!!

On Friday, October 23rd from 5:00 – 6:30 pm, all members of the CCV Burlington community are invited to help prepare dinner for people eating at the Friendly Kitchen at the Salvation Army in Burlington. This year is our 10th annual Salvation Army dinner as a part of CCV's Harvest for Hunger week.

There are many ways to participate including preparing food at home, donating money toward the purchase of Harrington Hams, as well as setting-up, serving and cleaning up at the event. In partnership with The Connecticut River Watershed Council and The White River Partnership, we’ll be joining a team of VT volunteers in the 13th annual effort to help clean up the Connecticut River and its tributaries. Volunteer with Americorps!

Each year CCV receives several Americorps positions that offer students of all ages an opportunity to earn scholarship money in exchange for service work. You can choose a term of service of either 300 hours or 450 hours to be completed over one calendar year. Your service can be fulfilled by volunteering at non-profit organizations in your community. You can choose to work at one organization or many – it’s up to you. Some organizations students have volunteered with in the past are:

· The Boys & Girls Club
· Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf
· The Greater Burlington YMCA
· The Peace & Justice Center

This is truly a great opportunity to earn up to $1,250 in scholarship money through service work for others. To be eligible, all applicants must either be a US citizen or permanent resident and at least seventeen years old.

Smith College & Mount Holyoke College Visit

Representatives from Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges will be visiting CCV Burlington on Friday, October 9, 2009 at noon. Join us for lunch and learn about two exciting transfer programs for women 24 or older.

The Ada Comstock Scholars Program at Smith College and the Frances Perkins Program at Mount Holyoke College offer women of nontraditional college age an opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Art degree. Students attend the same classes and fulfill the same requirements as do all other Smith and Mt. Holyoke students. Their strong motivation and commitment provide an example for students of traditional college age; the diversity of their life experience enriches the classroom and their expectations challenge the faculty.

The Ada Comstock Scholars Program and Frances Perkins Program combine rigorous academic challenges with flexibility for women beyond the traditional college age by providing options for reduced course loads, special academic advising, career counseling and diverse housing options. Both schools participate in the five college consortium enabling students to take classes at Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst, the University of Massachusetts and Hampshire College. Financial aid is available to each woman with demonstrated need.

Many CCV women students have transferred to Smith and Mt. Holyoke successfully. Presently there are over 400 students in these programs. Some bring their families with them, some come alone, some with a partner or spouse. Most arrive having earned between 32 and 64 transferable college credits in liberal arts courses.

This exhibit, titled "2 parts what, 10 parts whoa," features the work of Raychel Loo Severance and will be on display through October 31. A new art exhibit is on display in CCV Burlington's Pit Gallery (located in the110 Cherry Street, lower level). This exhibit features the work of the Box Art Studio and is titled "This and That." In this exhibit Alex Dotsie, Isaac Wasuck, Michael DeVasto, and Brooke Monte Rietveld share the Box Art Studio on Pine Street in Burlington. This painting show is a sampling of their diverse and talented styles. "This and That" will be on disply until October 31.

Book Vouchers

August Resource of the Month - Fuel Assistance

Lisa Jensen, CCV's new resource coordinator, is here to help students access community resources. August's resource of the month is fuel assistance. Fuel Assistance can help to pay part of your home heating bills. You might be eligible for fuel assistance whether you:
• Own your home or rent;
• Pay for your heat directly or it's included in your rent;
• Rent a room in someone else's home; or
• Live in public, subsidized, or Section 8 housing AND your rent includes the cost of heat

It is best to apply by August 31. To determine your eligibility, your household's income and resources will be considered. Go to www.dcf.vermont.gov/esd/fuel_assistance for the eligibility guidelines.

If you have questions contact Lisa or call Call the Office of Home Heating Fuel Assistance toll-free at 1-800-479-6151. Automated information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you need help completing the application form, contact your local Economic Services District Office, Community Action Agency, or Area Agency on Aging (for those age 60 and older).

Open Registration Begins at CCV Burlington

Open registration for fall courses at CCV Burlington began today. During this time you can apply, take assessments, register for classes, apply for financial aid and pay your bill all at the same time... and you don't need an appointment. Open registration will continue until August 28 and will take place during the following hours:

Monday - Friday: 10 AM - 4 PM (August 17 - 28)
Evenings (open until 6:00 PM): Tuesday, August 18 & 25

Student billing goes GREEN!

Starting this fall, CCV students will not receive bills by mail. Instead you can manage your account online by going to the Blackboard portal, where you can pay a bill, sign up for direct deposit for refunds, authorize someone else to pay your bill online, check your account and financial aid information, and sign up for the semester payment plan. Read on for more information on CCV's initiatives to make the billing process more environmentally friendly...

E-billing: As part of this green oriented initiative, CCV and other Vermont State Colleges (VSC) will no longer send out paper billing statements effective fall 2009. Instead, students who haven’t paid their bill (via payment, financial aid, vouchers or payment plans) will be sent an e-mail directing them to Web Services on the student portal for balance information. This new process will result in significant savings in paper, staff time and postage. Students who prefer to receive a paper statement in the mail have the ability to opt out of the e-billing option.

E-refunds: Another aspect of this project is the option for a student to receive direct deposit of his/her financial aid refund into his/her designated banking account instead of a paper refund check. This significantly increases the speed by which the student receives their refund, and increases the security of the funds getting to the student. Students can sign up for e-refunds on the student portal in Web Services.

Payment Plans: Yet another improvement under the this project is a new tuition payment plan administered by the VSC beginning this September. This new plan allows more options for students, including offering more payment dates (e.g., students can make 5 payments beginning early in the summer for fall, rather than just 3 payments).

CCV Welcomes United Way Resource Coordinator Lisa Jensen

Beginning this month, Lisa Jensen from the United Way of Chittenden County will be working part-time at CCV’s Burlington and Montpelier locations as a On-Site Resource Coordinator. Her role is to work with students who need help finding community resources to support their ability to stay in school, maintain jobs, etc. Sometimes, life outside of the classroom can make it very difficult to stay focused on your studies… and Lisa is here to help! This might include getting help finding childcare, transportation, fuel assistance, locating counseling services, and much much more!

Lisa will be available via phone or web conference. She will also be working from CCV Montpelier on Mondays from 10 AM to 2 PM and CCV Burlington on Wednesdays from 2 to 5 PM. (Schedule may change for the fall semester.) Three CCV students from Burlington’s spring ‘09 Social Problems (SOC-1030) class are organizing the upcoming “Pantry Party” that we told you about in last week's blog entry. This fundraiser is for a food pantry n the lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The students helped rebuild the pantry in May as a part of the class’s service learning trip to Louisiana. All proceeds from the event will go toward bringing the food pantry up to code so the residents of this community can get the help they need. Let me first say thank you for your recent comments in the “Facing Facts” section of Seven Days. It’s nice to see the Community College of Vermont receive some much-deserved kudos for the role they play throughout the state. That being said, I must ask why you felt it necessary to use the quotation marks around the word college in your statement? CCV is an accredited institution with over 7500 graduated alums. Next year we are celebrating our 40th anniversary as a college, and we have 17 different associate-degree programs available to students. We have transfer agreements with 16 colleges and universities, including St. Michael’s College, the University of Vermont, and several out-of-state colleges. We are a leader in online learning. Our students go on to attend not only the usual in-state colleges, but Tufts University and Smith. This year alone, several of them graduated from Smith’s Ada Comstock Scholars program — no small feat, I can assure you.

We have wonderful, healthy partnerships with other area agencies, businesses and nonprofit organizations. The Boys and Girls Club and area high schools strongly benefit from these commitments. The class Introduction to College Studies allows students to enroll at CCV while attending their junior and senior years of high school. During this class they learn skills they will need to help them succeed in future college courses, and when they pass the course are given a voucher for a free, college-level class.

In tandem with the Vermont Department of Labor we now offer a Career Readiness Certificate. This course is designed specifically for people not currently attending college classes. By the end of the semester, men and women have developed higher skills in résumé writing, interview techniques and other professional abilities to help them succeed in today’s difficult job market.

So, please, sing our praises! But don’t think for a minute we aren’t a real “college.” We work hard to give students the tools they need to compete in our ever-changing world. And I don’t just work for the college; I’m also a proud alumna, class of 2000.

The latest gallery exhibit at CCV Burlington's Pearl Gallery (located at 119 Pearl Street, Burlington) is a group show titled "Drawings to Save Your Skin"

True art relies heavily on the line between tension and liberation, creating an energy translated through line which the viewer can feel at their core. These drawings are the release of artistic force which compels the artist to create. Without letting go of that energy we are lost, frantic, and unhappy souls. Literally, drawing does, at times, save us. The show runs June 4 - August 1, 2009.

Several members of the CCV Burlington community also received special recognition at the event. Lauren Brabazon, a Burlington Graphic Design student gave the student commencement address and Martha Machar, a Burlington Liberal Studies student, was awarded the alumni scholarship award. Kelsi Powers and Michael Richman also received the student and faculty community service awards!
